This is a big question that people seem to want answered when they see us.
The answer is, we don't know...never thought about it too much.
For years Karl and Grant knocked about like flirty girls. Swapping basslines and hanging out. Then Grant started Toupé with the first drummer, Aaron Head. They recorded lots of silly songs and producer Alex McDougal added lots of mad squelch stuff over it.
Taking it out live was going to be hard without backing tracks etc, so Grant asked Karl, who was mad on effects and making basses sound crazy - so Grant asked him to try and learn the bleep for live output.
It worked. Soon the bleep developed into songs written around two basses and drums. And the amount of fun they had glued the whole thing together to form Toupé in it's rawest form.
Then Jay joined up in 2005. And the glue hardened.
